John joined Portland District Health in August 2026 as Executive Director Medical Services, bringing extensive experience in both rural general practice and medical leadership across Australia and New Zealand. He trained and worked as a rural GP in North West Queensland, with a background spanning general practice, emergency medicine and hospital medicine. Most recently, he worked with WA Country Health Service in the Kimberley region, including at Broome Hospital.
One of the key factors that attracted John to Portland was the vital role that general practice plays in supporting the health and wellbeing of the local community. He is a strong advocate for integrated healthcare and believes that patients should experience healthcare services as one connected system rather than a collection of separate organisations. Throughout his career, he has been committed to building strong partnerships between hospitals, primary care providers and community health services to improve patient outcomes and service delivery.
A key focus of his role at Portland District Health is strengthening communication and collaboration between PDH and local general practitioners. He is passionate about improving the flow of clinical information, streamlining referral and discharge processes, and creating opportunities for GPs to contribute to service development, clinical governance and innovative models of care. He is particularly interested in hearing from local GPs about what is working well, where challenges exist, and how PDH can better support them and their patients.
John looks forward to working closely with general practitioners across Portland and the wider region and to building strong partnerships that support the health needs of the community.
