Volunteer with us
Volunteers are an important part of Portland District Health - an enthusiastic group of people sharing their time, skills and life experiences with us to support clients, patients, staff and the wider community. By providing their time, enthusiasm and dedication, our volunteers work alongside healthcare professional staff to add value to our community's healthcare and other services.
Where our volunteers are involved
- Support in the hospital - a number of activities throughout the hospital, supporting both patients and staff.
- Palliative Care - support to palliative care patients and their families in the community. Volunteers must complete an intensive Palliative Care training program before entering a patient's residence.
- Meals on Wheels - delivering meals in the volunteer's own car to residents in their own homes.
- Harbourside Lodge - spending time with residents doing craft, activities and excursions, and sitting and chatting.
- Consumer Advisory Committee - meets monthly; an advisory committee to the Board of Directors providing a central focus for all consumer-involvement strategies across PDH.
- Event Volunteer - supporting PDH fundraising, health and community events, organising committees, project work, collating information and mail-outs.
- Telecare - a telephone service providing reassurance and social support with a daily call to clients at home.
- Community Transport - taking PDH clients in the Community Transport car to appointments.
- Pastoral Visitor - representatives from church organisations visiting and conducting church services.
- Administration - a variety of roles from basic administration support to one-off project tasks.
How to become a volunteer
To volunteer in one of our departments, you will be required to undertake the following process:
- Meet with the Volunteer Coordinator to discuss the opportunities and your skills
- Undertake a Police check and referee checks, and complete an application form and other required paperwork
- Complete training in the area and complete volunteer orientation
- Undertake your first shift and induction into your volunteer role
