OUR SERVICES

Maternal and Child Health

The Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Service is a free service funded jointly by the Victorian Government and local government, serving families with children from birth to school age through centres staffed by registered nurses with midwifery and child and family health qualifications.

At MCH centres, families can receive information and support on parenting, child health, development, behaviour, sleep, immunisation, breastfeeding, nutrition, safety and family planning; attend one-on-one health and development consultations at set intervals; and participate in parent groups, supported playgroups and educational sessions.

After birth, the hospital or midwife notifies the MCH service, which then contacts families to arrange a home visit. Follow-up appointments are scheduled until age 3.5 years, with ten free MCH appointments recommended during this period.

Central office contact: phone (03) 5521 0504, email mch.pdh@swarh.vic.gov.au.

Service locations: Casterton — Kathleen Millikan Centre, 1A Jackson Street, Thursday 9am-5pm; Heywood — Glenelg Shire Council Offices, 77 Edgar Street, Wednesday 9am-5pm; Portland — Fawthrop Community Centre, 3 Bentinck Street, Monday-Friday 9am-5pm; Dartmoor — Dartmoor Bush Nursing Centre, 28 Ascot Street, by appointment.
