Portland District Health offers overnight sleep studies for patients experiencing sleep difficulties, designed for individuals with prolonged poor sleep or excessive daytime sleepiness who may have an underlying sleep disorder. Sleep studies can help identify conditions including sleep apnoea, periodic limb movement disorder, narcolepsy, hypersomnolence, parasomnias, and chronic insomnia.
Testing occurs onsite at Portland District Health. Patients arrive around 7:30pm and remain overnight until approximately 6:00am, with sensors monitoring brain activity, eye movements, heart electrical activity, muscle function, breathing patterns, oxygen levels, body position and sound levels throughout the night.
A doctor or GP referral is required. The service operates four nights weekly and is covered under Medicare. Email sleepstudies.pdh@swarh.vic.gov.au, phone (03) 5521 0392 (Mondays, Tuesdays, Fridays).
