Health Promotion is much more than just educating people on how to be healthy — it's about encouraging, supporting and enabling people to do so. The service addresses the social determinants of health and works at the upstream end of the health and wellbeing spectrum, focusing on strengthening community action, developing personal skills, creating supportive environments, and building healthy policy. Priority areas for 2025-29 are Healthy Food Systems, Social and Emotional Wellbeing, and Cancer Screening.
Health Promotion Practitioners support healthy change within settings such as schools, workplaces and sports clubs, provide current resources and information, and support policy development and review. Key programs include the Free Fresh Food Swap (Thursdays, 10am-12pm at Portland Library), the Glenelg Shire Food Relief Guide, Healthy Choices Guidelines implementation, the Live4Life Glenelg youth mental health education partnership, SafeTALK Suicide Prevention training, and free information sessions on bowel, breast, cervical, lung, skin and prostate cancer screening.
