The sun shone as Portland District Health celebrated NAIDOC Week

Naidoc week

The annual public event was cancelled for the past two years due to COVID-19, but PDH was very keen to recognise the contribution of Indigenous people to the local community and to strengthen connections with the health service.

PDH’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Workforce Officer Sonia Shelton, said NAIDOC Week was an important time for the broader community to learn about First Nations’ cultures and histories and participate in celebrations of the oldest, continuous living cultures on earth.

“Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people contribute to our community in a variety of ways including music, art, culture, community, education, environment, sport and politics,” Ms Shelton said.

The NAIDOC celebrations featured the Koondoom Yarkeen Karweeyn Dancers and was followed by a morning tea.

The theme for NAIDOC Week 2022 is Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up! to support and secure institutional, structural, collaborative, and cooperative reforms, and narrow the gap between aspiration and reality, good intent and outcome.
